Work
December 12
The LORD will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. Deuteronomy 28:12
Our culture views work as punishment or some necessary evil. For most of us, if we were independently wealthy and of need of nothing, we would choose not to work, but rather engage in things that bring us entertainment and pleasure. For the majority of us, we will spend our waking hours working. Why is it that we see our work as a prison sentence, looking forward to the day of our retirement?
God has ordained work and called it a good thing. Work is not a punishment. Work has dignity. Work is something that God does. God has employed us to participate with Him in cultivating and restoring His creation. Why does work matter to God? God calls us to work with him in providing for other people. As Christians we must see our work as a critical way in which God is caring for human beings and renewing his world. We must spend our waking hours in fellowship with God, in whatever our hands find to do.
