Humility
May 24
It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud. Proverbs 16:19
Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. As it did for the angels that sinned and rebelled against God and fell into condemnation. A self-exalting attitude of pride seeks to dislodge God from the center of all things and deny him the glory that is due him. A proud person does not feel a need for God as Savior. Those who divide the spoil win the worlds riches and favor. They are often vain and value themselves and despise others. We are warned not to be so high minded. Pride makes God your enemy and the devil your master.
Followers of the meek and lowly Jesus are humble in spirit and grateful for their rescue. They have recognized their sinfulness and cried out for deliverance from evil, wholly trusting in Christ for their salvation. They care not for the empty promises of riches and fame, but rather accept poverty with Christ over anything this world has to offer. It is far better to be poor and humble than to be rich and proud.
